Bare Root Hornbeam
(Carpinus Betulus)

Hornbeam is a well-known, classic hedge. Their flourishing green leaves act as a dense barrier which can bring privacy, security, noise, and wind protection to your space.

Bare Root Hornbeam plants are only available to buy and plant throughout November - March, but can be pre-ordered at any time outside of the bare root season.

Hornbeam plants tend to cling onto their leaves throughout Winter, turning into deep shades of yellow and orange. It also loves to boast pretty, little, green catkins in the late Spring, which then turn into fruits during late Autumn.

It's the perfect formal feature for any garden. It may look quite like Beech, too, but the leaves on Hornbeam plants have much deeper veins and serrated edges.

Please note, that as this variant of the Hornbeam species is a bare root, you will need to plant as soon as possible after it is delivered.

As it is highly resilient, Hornbeam can tolerate many poor soil conditions like shade, or clay/wet soils, and even high winds. It's rather easy to maintain when kept between 1 and 5m, too.

  • Growth rate: Average (20-40cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 2.5m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Normal
  • Exposure: Coastal, exposed, inland
  • Aspect: Semi-shade, sun
  • Evergreen foliage? No

When you receive your Hornbeam Bare Root plant, dunk it into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours to dampen the roots. They must be wet before planting. Ensure you drench the planting hole before and after planting, too.

In terms of pruning, however, it's quite a simple job. You can trim it as neat as you want, once a year, in the late Summer. This will ensure the plant retains its gorgeous Winter shades.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
