Field Rose hedging produces pure white, fragrant, summer flowers on great, long stems- the perfect plant for any wild/cottage garden, especially when faced with poor soil.̴Ì?

Besides its stunning flowers and bright foliage, Field Rose plants also produces these lovely, red, round rose hips, ensuring you get stunning year-round interest.

Though it is a deciduous plant, Field Rose foliage often persists well into the Winter, making it quite the durable, hardy species. We highly recommend planting with other species, too, as this will give you the ultimate, attractive hedgerow.

Field Rose plants can reach an ultimate height of 3.7m within 10-20 years.

If needed, you should only prune during Winter, following these specific steps:

  • Cut stems down on a slope, no more than 5mm above a bud.
  • Cut to the appropriate height if you do not see any visible dormant buds.
  • Ensure you keep your cuts clean- keep secateurs sharp. You may need to use a pruning saw/pair of loppers for larger, thicker stems.
  • Cut away any diseased/dead/congested stems.
  • For mature plants, cut away any old wood that's failing to produce new stems.
  1. Prepare the ground by digging the hole/trench twice as wide as the diameter of the plant's root system, but about the same depth. Ensure all weeds have been removed.
  2. Spread out the roots, ensuring the planting depth is correct. The part where the roots flare out should be level with the surface of the soil (you may need to remove any excess soil on top of pot grown plants to reveal this point).
  3. Mix in some organic matter/compost to the excess soil that will be used to backfill the hole. If you are using RootGrow, do so by sprinkling a thin layer on the bottom of the planting hole.
  4. Water the hole well, and place the plant in. Backfill with soil, ensuring it is worked in to the plant's roots. Gently pat down to secure the plant, and water again if it seems dry (this is especially important if planting during hot/dry weather).
  5. Finish off by mulching to a depth of 7.5cm after planting. This will suppress weeds and help the soil to retain warmth and moisture.
  6. Regularly water for the first year or so after being planted. This is vital for the plant's survival.
