Even though Beech hedging is well-known for its deciduous nature, it is also known to be semi-evergreen due to the way some of its bold Winter leaves may often stay on the hedge until they're ready for new Spring growth. It's the perfect alternative to any evergreen hedging with its year-round interest.

As this variant of the Beech species is bare root, you will need to plant as soon as possible after it arrives on your doorstep.

This 40/60cm bare root Beech plant is fast growing and can reach above 2.5m tall when planted in good conditions.

You can grow Beech Bare Root hedging in sun or partial shade, and it will generally thrive best in well-drained soils. We do not recommend planting in heavy clay or wet sites.

  • Growth height: Fast (40-60cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 2.5m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Normal
  • Exposure: Coastal, exposed, inland
  • Aspect: Semi-shade, full sun
  • Evergreen foliage? No

As soon as your Beech Bare Root hedging arrives, you must put it straight into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet before planting. Ensure you drench the planting hole before and after planting, too.

In terms of pruning, you should only need to prune Beech hedging once or twice a year. You can trim it lightly in June if needed (but only if the plant is established), and then again in August. Hard pruning should not be a worry as Beech has a very fast growth rate and is more likely to recover easily.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
