How far apart should I plant Crab Apple plants?

When looking to grow Crab Apple as a hedge, you will need to space bare roots around 20cm apart (5 plants per metre). This will provide a solid, dense hedge within a reasonable space of time. It is advised to create a zig-zag pattern with as many as 5-7 per metre, however.

How to plant Crab Apple:

Begin by soaking the roots of the bare root plant in a bucket of water for at least 2 hours, or spraying with a garden hose thoroughly. This is a vital step, as the roots cannot be dry when planted (they require a lot of water to survive).

In the meantime, dig your hole or trench (if you haven't already). The hole should be at least twice as wide as the root mass or pot that the plant was originally growing in, but the same depth. Following this, take the plant and place it into the middle of the hole, ensuring it's straight and the plants are evenly spread out. Begin to fill in carefully, and pat down as you go along to remove any air pockets.

Once secured and firmed in, water the Crab Apple plants very well, and cover the top of the soil with a generous 2-3" layer of mulch. Continue to then water the plant(s) on a weekly basis (around 2-3 times per week, or more so during warmer weather), for the next 1-2 years. It is very important to ensure the plants get enough water, especially when they're bare roots, as they are not able to uptake much water from the ground themselves for at least 12 months.
