Easy Care Hedging Ideas!
If you're looking for the best plants to create a low-maintenance, easy care hedge, this is the blog for you!
Many of us see hedging as labour-intensive and time consuming, but it doesn't have to be that way. Choosing slow-growing plants that need very little pruning throughout their lifetime, is a handy little trick to gaining yourself a lovely hedge that will [pretty much] look after itself.
You can always go for hedging that can be left to grow wild- this will usually be made using native species, and is the perfect choice when looking for a wildlife garden.
That being said, our main tip to keeping most hedging low-maintenance is by pruning around once or twice a year (if it is slow growing), and not leaving it to grow any higher than 2m. We also recommend avoiding plants that will grow upwards instead of outwards, as they're much harder to prune.
With that all in mind, here's some of our top picks for easy care hedging:
Berberis thunbergii
If you select a slow growing variety of Berberis thunbergii, you're sure to have a stunning, colourful, low-maintenance hedge with ease. We recommend Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea...a lovely shrub that will produce clusters of yellow flowers which contrast perfectly against it's deep purple foliage. All it simply requires is a light prune to keep it under control!
Choisya Ternata
Choisya ternata is suited to growing both partial shade and full sun. With their stunning evergreen foliage year-round, and beautifully scented, white flowers in spring - late summer, they're the perfect easy care hedge for any garden! All it will require is a light prune every now and then to keep it the height and shape you wish.
Burkwood Osmanthus
Osmanthus x Burkwoodii is a brilliant choice for low-maintenance hedging, as it is a slow-growing evergreen with stunning, scented blooms during spring. Burkwood requires minimal pruning, but we do recommend keeping it below 2m for complete ease.
English Yew
English Yew is a charming evergreen plant that will provide bold levels of colour in your garden. As well as this, not only is it slow-growing and easy to maintain, but it comes along with major benefits of privacy, windbreak, and noise reduction! It is the perfect easy care hedge for small and large gardens, just the same. Yew can easily adapt to all sorts of soil types, too!
So, that's a few low-maintenance hedging options. Hedging doesn't have to be so daunting after all...
