The Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea is a deciduous, slow-growing hedge, sitting at about 10-20cm per annum, which makes it the perfect choice when looking for a low, but prickly, hedge that offers an abundance of colours throughout the year- if you are suffering from Box blight, then this is the choice for you! It is especially useful when wanting to create colourful borders or edging to paths, considering its leaves give off a lovely, attractive, purple-red glow when caught in the sun.

As the season goes on, be ready to welcome wildlife to your garden with the Purple Berberis, as the orange berries that turn into a deep red are seen as a wonderful treat to the birds.

It is also easily maintainable (ideally at 1m high), due to it being such a slow grower.

The Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea is a hardy plant that can easily grow in most soil and sites, even coastal, though they always prefer a bit of sun or partial shade as this helps the plant to thrive best.

As it is a pot grown plant, you can easily leave the plant in its pot for a few days/weeks before planting it. Just ensure you keep the plant well-watered, and it gets enough sun. Don't leave it for too long, however, as you don't want the roots becoming root bound.

Looking after your Purple Berberis is rather simple, as all it requires is a trim after the flowering season is over (annually).

  1. Prepare the soil by mixing in some compost. Dig the hole- this will have to be about twice the width of the root system, but the same depth.
  2. Remove the plant from its pot by placing one hand on the base of the plant, and the other at the bottom of the pot. Wriggle the pot away gently.
  3. Untangle the roots a little as they may be clumped together.
  4. Place the plant into the hole, ensuring the base of the stem is level with the surface of the soil. Follow this with backfilling the hole with your soil mix, and patting down lightly to secure.
  5. When you're done, thoroughly water the plant. Ensure you regularly water throughout its first year, as the plant needs plenty to be able to settle down, recover, and establish.
