Rosa Canina is an attractive, native species of hedging that boasts delicately fragranced pink/white flowers in the summer, that then give way to berry-looking rose hips.
About Dog Rose Hedge Plants
The Dog Rose is a tough, native hedge that is well-known for its prickly, but lovely, growing habit. It is most grown as an informal garden shrub, and makes an ideal intruder deterrent plant, as the thorns create an impenetrable barrier. You can leave it to grow wonderfully on its own or create a nice mixed hedge with other native hedging.
As it has a very dense nature, the Rosa canina makes a wonderful shelter for wildlife, who adore the vitamin-C rich berries - these berries are also edible for humans and are known to make fantastic jam, as well as being commonly used to make rosehip oil.
It will grow about 40-60cm per year, and is very fast-growing, meaning it is a rambling shrub that will quickly become bushy and thick.
Key Features
The Rosa canina plant will grow best in moist, but well-drained soil. It will thrive best in a sunny position but can still be placed in a partially shaded area. Being low maintenance, it is a hardy shrub that can easily tolerate strong winds, meaning it can grow well near the coast- this makes it the perfect choice if being faced with some exposed coastal garden space.

How To Plant Dog Rose
When should I plant Dog Rose hedging?
The best season to plant your Dog Rose hedging is throughout autumn or spring, when the weather is a little cooler and damper - bear in mind, bare root plants can only be planted from November-March.
How far apart do you plant Dog Rose plants?
On average, we recommend planting Dog Rose plants around 30-45cm apart. For bare roots, however, you may need to plant as close as 20cm apart (especially for plants at 40/60cm tall). This ensures a thick, dense hedge is produced in a short space of time.
How to plant Dog Rose:
Begin by digging a hole that's around twice as wide as the plant's root mass, but the same depth. Mic the excess soil with some soil mix or organic compost, and lay a sprinkling of RootGrow onto the bottom of the hole (adding fertiliser is not necessary, but highly recommended for bare roots).
Place the plant into the hole and ensure the base of the stem is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil mix, and gently pat down to secure the plant. Follow this by watering the plant abundantly.
Continue to water very well (around 2 or 3 times a week), for the first year after planting. Please bear in mind that bare root plants will require more water than this, especially throughout its first spring/summer.
