About Bare Root Blackthorn Hedging

Bare root Blackthorn plants are only available to buy and plant from November - March, but can be pre-ordered at any time outside of the bare root season.

Due to its prickly nature, Blackthorn is ideal as a security hedge species- the birds love to use these plants for shelter, too.

If you're lucky, pick the sloes before the birds get them, and you can make some delicious sloe gin!

Ensure you plant your Blackthorn Bare Root hedge as soon as possible once they're delivered. The roots cannot dry out.

As soon as you get your Blackthorn Bare Root hedge, place the plant straight into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours- this is because the roots must be wet before planting.

After planting, ensure you keep it well-watered (the soil must be well-draining, too).

Stick to trimming your Blackthorn hedge in the Winter, during the dormant months (do not prune during freezing temperatures). You have the option to leave your Prunus spinosa to grow naturally, or to keep it nice and neat. Just make sure you wear some protection when trimming/pruning as it's rather prickly.
