Ready to plant in November- March, Bird Cherry Bare Root hedging is a lovely hedge that's decorated with delicate, white, sweetly-fragranced, star-shaped flowers in the Summer, and small, bitter fruits in the Autumn (which are loved by wildlife!). Find out more

Bird Cherry is the ideal plant for any sort of occasion, as it loves to be planted both on its own as a little hedge, or even as a tree. It can provide year-round interest with its smell, style, and shades of green, white, and golden yellow.

However, please don't forget that bare root plants must be planted as soon as possible after arriving on your doorstep. You cannot leave your Bird Cherry Bare Root plants for any longer than a couple of days.

Your Bird Cherry will grow up to 4m high, with its average growth rate of 20-40cm per year.

  • Growth rate: Average (20-40cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 4m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Normal
  • Exposure: Sheltered, inland
  • Aspect: Full sun, semi-shade
  • Evergreen foliage? No

As soon as your Bird Cherry Bare Root plant arrives, place it into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet before planting. Ensure you water the plant hole before planting and continue to water the Bird Cherry during its development.

In terms of care and maintenance, your Bird Cherry plant can be left to grow naturally on its own accord- most gardeners prefer to do this. However, if you would rather give it a bit of a tidy-up, just carry out a light prune during Summer (after fruiting and flowering has finished). Ensure you remove any broken/dead/diseased/crossing branches, too. Do not prune at the wrong time of the year as this will lead to the plant being open to diseases.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
