Redcurrant Rovada
(Ribes rubrum 'Rovada')

Redcurrant Rovada is one of the best currant varieties out there. It's a late flowering, late fruiting, Dutch bred plant, making it perfect for extending the fruiting season!

Redcurrant Rovada bushes produce enormous crops of up to 10kg per bush! These crops are full of delicious, big, juicy fruits which hang on long strings, making them ultimately easy to pick.

With an outstanding flavour, the currants are definitely best when eaten fresh, but you can always freeze them or use in your favourite dishes!

Rovada is relatively vigorous and has an upright growing habit, too.

Make sure you plant your currant bush in full sun, and in light sandy/thin chalky soil, that is well-draining and has an acidic pH.

  • Ideal height: 1.2m-1.5m Medium
  • Soil type: Thin chalky, light sandy, acidic
  • Aspect: Full sun
  • Evergreen foliage? No
  • Crops: Mid July- August

As this is a bare root plant, soak the roots for at least 2 hours before planting, after they arrive. Plant as soon as you can. If the ground is frozen, place into a temporary pot that's filled with decent compost- once conditions have improved, move the currant plant to the ground.

Keep the plant well-watered during dry weather.̴Ì?

Make sure you fertilise the bush with Rootgrow in Spring. Once your Redcurrant has been growing for 3 years, you can prune all the branches by one-third. We also highly recommend protecting your bushes against birds by putting a net over the fruiting plants. Besides this, this is a very easy plant to maintain, needing very little special care.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
