Alder hedging is a fast-growing, deciduous plant that produces catkins in Spring, and wood-like cones in Autumn. It tolerates poor-quality and wet soils, making it a rather durable, hardy natured species. It's the perfect choice when faced with a waterside or coastal garden.

As this is a bare root variant, you will need to plant your Alder as soon as possible after it arrives.

These 90/120cm bare root Alder plants have a fast growth rate and will grow above 5m tall when planted in good conditions.

Alder can reach an ultimate height of 5m, with its fast growth rate of 60cm per year.

  • Growth rate: Fast (40-60cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 5m+ tall
  • Soil type: Wet, very wet
  • Exposure: Sheltered, exposed, coastal, inland
  • Aspect: Full sun
  • Evergreen foliage? No

As soon as your Alder Bare Root hedging is received, place it into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet before planting, and the plant hole should be drenches both before and after planting, too. Do not let the bare root dry out as it will need plenty of water to develop and thrive.

Regarding maintenance, only trim Alder hedging in the late Autumn as to not remove any new growing shoots- even though it is deciduous, you will find that the plant begins producing some new shoots during Winter.
