Alder Buckthorn's bark is dark brown, but when the inner bark is exposed, it has a much brighter, yellow colour. Unlike common buckthorn, Alder's maroon stems and branches are much smoother and have zero thorns.

One key thing to notice on Alder Buckthorn hedging is its perfectly alternating leaves along their twigs, with lateral veins. The hairy buds during Wintertime are a distinct Alder feature too!

As this is a bare root plant, you will need to plant it as soon as possible after delivery as the roots are tender and cannot be left to dry out.

These 60/90cm bare root Alder Buckthorn plants have an average growth rate but can will grow up to 3m-6m tall when planted in good conditions.

  • Growth rate: Average (20-40cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 3-6m Tall
  • Soil type: Chalky, wet
  • Exposure: Exposed, windy, coastal
  • Aspect: Damp shade, dry shade
  • Evergreen foliage? No

As soon as you receive your bare root plant, place it into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet when planted.

If necessary, prune your Alder Buckthorn plant near the end of Winter or beginning of Spring. All you will need to do is remove any dead, diseased, crossing, or congested shoots- those that are growing out of the desired shape can also be pruned out. You will not need to carry out a pruning routine.

We do recommend adding some mulch and feed, however, after pruning. This will maintain overall health.
