Bare Root Barberry Rose Glow
(Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow')

Barberry Rose Glow is a lovely, deciduous, compact hedge with gorgeous variegation colours of cream, purple and pink, making it ideal for ornamental purposes.

Bare Root Barberry Rose Glow plants are only available to buy and plant during November - March, but can be planted at any time of year outside of the bare root season.

Young foliage on Barberry Rose Glow is initially purple, but soon goes on to develop into cream, silver, and pink variegation. This colour lasts all summer long until the deciduous plants turn into shades of red before dropping off during Autumn. During Spring, the plant also produces delicate, little, yellow flowers, tinted with red- they soon turn into vivid red berries during Autumn, always a welcomed treat by the birds!

As good as it can be as an ornamental plant, Barberry Rose Glow is also ideal as an intruder deterrent hedge due to its prickly nature.̴Ì?

Make sure you plant your Barberry Rose Glow bare root plant as soon as possible after being delivered, as the roots are tender and cannot be left to dry out.

Barberry Rose Glow will tolerate any site (except full shade/very wet), and will grow in most soils, even the poorest.
  • Growth height: Average (20-40cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 1.2m - 2.5m Medium
  • Soil type: Normal
  • Exposure: Coastal, exposed, inland
  • Aspect: Semi-shade, full sun
  • Evergreen foliage? No

As soon as you receive your bare root plant, place it into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet when planted.

You should only need to trim your Barberry Rose Glow plant after flowering season is over. It is also recommended to prune the hedge every year during Autumn/Winter, as to encourage higher, brighter variegation on the foliage the following year.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
