Guelder Rose is the ideal ornamental species with its decorative flat clusters of lovely, white flowers. By Autumn, you'll be gifted stunning red berries that beautifully complement the autumnal leaf shades- they're seen as a great source of food for birds, too!̴Ì?

You must plant Guelder Rose Bare Root plants as soon as possible after they're delivered. The roots are tender and cannot dry out.̴Ì?

This 90/120cm bare root Guelder Rose plant has an average growth rate but will exceed 5m tall in good conditions.

With an average growth rate, Guelder Rose hedging can reach an ultimate height of 5m.
  • Growth rate: Average (20-40cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 5m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Normal, chalk, clay
  • Exposure: Inland, exposed
  • Aspect: Full sun, semi-shade
  • Evergreen foliage? No

You must place your bare root plant straight into a bucket of water for 2 hours or more, after being delivered. The roots are tender and cannot be left to dry out.̴Ì?

Guelder Rose does not need much pruning or maintenance, being one of the very few plants that produce flowers and berries on previous year's growth. If you have a healthy plant, new stems will always grow each year- you will just need to give it a general trim to maintain its shape. Any pruning should be done near the end of Spring, removing dead, broken, or overcrowded branches. Up to one-third of the plant can be trimmed each year.̴Ì?

Please note: Even though trimming the plant will lead to a loss of berries the same year, there will be a much stronger, healthier yield of berries the following year.̴Ì?

Hard pruning will need to be done to overgrown/old plants, and must be done in the late Autumn months, before Winter.̴Ì?

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
