Elder is a deciduous, native, fast-growing plant that is ideal as a single or mixed hedging species, with its big, fragrant, elder flowers and bright green foliage.

You will see big, flat, creamy-white Elder flowers begin to bloom around Summertime (in June/July). These are then followed with unique, little, black fruits- which are high in Vitamin C!

Elder plants generally begin to produce leaves quite early, around January, and the foliage will last until late November (but only if the plant is in a sheltered site). The flowers have a sweet fragrance, that we as people love- but rabbits don't! So, if you're struggling with meddling rabbits, this is the plant for you.

Please note: The berries and flowers are edible; however, the stems and leaves are harmful when eaten- be cautious when picking.

You will need to plant your Elder Bare Root as soon as you can after it arrives. The roots cannot dry out, or the plant will not survive.

This 60/90cm bare root Elder plant is fast-growing but can exceed 3m tall in good conditions.

With a fast growth rate, Elder hedging can reach an ultimate height of 4m in good conditions- though it is quite a hardy plant and can tolerate coastal sites.

As soon as you receive your Elder Bare Root plant, place it into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet before planting. You will also need to continually water it throughout its growth as Elder particularly likes a moist soil.

Sambucus nigra is quite a low maintenance plant. You should only need to give it a trim once a year- in February, March, or April.
