Red Stemmed Dogwood produces blue berries, too, with its lovely little flowers and brightly coloured stems- all of which complement deep green, oval leaves that will redden in the Autumn and eventually drop off.̴Ì?

Dogwood will not only provide you with year-round colour, but it is also rather hardy, and can look incredible when placed in front or beside an evergreen hedge.̴Ì?

Please note that Red Stemmed Dogwood must be planted as soon as possible after delivery. The roots cannot dry out and must remain moist.̴Ì?

This 40/60cm bare root Red Stemmed Dogwood plant has an average growth rate, but can reach above 3m tall when planted in good conditions.

Red Stemmed Dogwood will reach an ultimate height of 3m in good conditions, with its average growth rate of 20-40cm per year.
  • Growth rate: Average (20-40cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 3m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Normal, moist
  • Exposure: Inland
  • Aspect: Full sun, semi-shade

Dogwood should be given a hard prune. Do not prune in its first year of growth, but after this, cut the stems down to the base within 4" of the ground (every February/March before they bud). It's also very important to water and feed the plant well after pruning, as this will help with the production of some lovely, new, healthy shoots.̴Ì?

It's also possible to bring older plants back to life by cutting away the old wood from the centre. This will encourage growth of much brighter, and newer stems.̴Ì?

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
