English Oak has multi-lobed, dark green leaves, which are splayed on little stems and grow into bunches of twisted branches. With it being deciduous, the plant will provide you with lush autumnal colours of deep orange and bright yellow, too.

It's a favourite with the wildlife- the dense foliage is the perfect habitat, and the acorns are a favourite with the squirrels!

Please note: You must plant your English Oak Bare Root plant as soon as possible after it arrives. The roots cannot be left to dry out.

This 40/60cm bare root English Oak plant is fast-growing and can exceed 4m tall when planted in good conditions.

English Oak has an ultimate height and spread of 10m x 6m, with its spreading habit, but we recommend keeping it to 4m when wanting a hedge.
  • Growth rate: Fast (40-60cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 4m+ Tall
  • Soil type: All soil types- moist, well-drained
  • Exposure: Inland, exposed
  • Aspect: Full sun, semi-shade
  • Evergreen foliage? No

You will need to place your English Oak Bare Root plant straight into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours after it is delivered. The roots must be wet before planting. Ensure you continue to water the plant throughout its growth, too, as Oak particularly likes a moist, well-draining soil.

English Oak is quite a low-maintenance plant and does not need much pruning. You should only need to remove any shoots growing the wrong way- do this during Autumn, when the plant is dormant.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
