Though they are mainly known for their astounding green foliage, Cherry Laurel also boasts small, creamy-white flowers in the Spring, which are then followed with shiny red berries, adding a lovely festive touch in the Winter.

It's the ideal plant to reduce noise and wind, too, with its fast growth rate and dense, compact growing habit. As this species variant is a bare root, Cherry Laurel will need to be planted as soon as possible after arriving on your doorstep.

Please note, all parts of the Cherry Laurel (including leaves/berries) are toxic to both humans and animals when consumed. Though the plant does not hold much attraction to pets/children, it is particularly advised to avoid planting near livestock. If you are concerned about your pets and children, it is best to choose Bay Laurel (the only non-toxic Laurel).

This 40/60cm bare root Cherry Laurel plant can reach up to 5m high when planted in good conditions.

You can plant your Bare Root Cherry Laurel in pretty much any condition- whether that's a dry site, or heavily shaded area, it can tolerate it all! It's the perfect plant for any problem areas in your garden.

Just make sure that when planting, the hole space is big enough for the roots to spread.

  • Growth rate: Average- fast (30-60cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 1.5m- 5m Tall
  • Soil type: Normal, dry
  • Exposure: Exposed, inland
  • Aspect: Full sun, full shade
  • Evergreen foliage? Yes

As soon as your Cherry Laurel arrives, place the roots straight into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet before planting. Ensure you drench the planting hole before, and after planting. Continue to water well until established.

Make sure you only plant in good quality, well-draining soil.

In terms of hard pruning your Cherry Laurel, it is recommended to stick to pruning in March only. You can carry out any general hedge trimming twice a year (June and September). Though you can always leave the plant to develop in its own natural way, too.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
