Though Box hedging is quite a slow-growing hedge, it's easy to plant, manage, and upkeep. It's the ideal species when looking for year-round interest and an impressive privacy screen that can be shaped and used in many ways.

As this species variant is a bare root, Buxus Sempervirens will need to be planted as soon as possible after it arrives on your doorstep.

This 20/40cm bare root box plant is slow growing but can reach above 2.5m tall when planted in good conditions.

The small, dark green leaves found on Box hedging, has an average growth rate of about 10-15cm per year. The little insignificant flowers that bloom in Summer are popular with the bees, too, adding a bit of wildlife interest to your garden.

  • Growth rate: Slow (10-15cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 2.5m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Normal, chalk, clay
  • Exposure: Inland, coastal, exposed
  • Aspect: Full sun, semi-shade, full shade
  • Evergreen foliage? Yes

As soon as your Buxus Sempervirens Bare Root arrives, you will need to place it straight into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet before planting. Ensure you drench the planting hole before and after planting, too.

In terms of pruning, you will only need to trim Box hedging once or twice a year. You can prune back about one-third of a young Box's growth. Elsewise, just trim once/twice a year within May and August. We also recommend adding a bit of well-rotted compost, or mulch, to the base of the plant to keep it in its best condition.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
