Pot Grown Wintergreen Barberry
(Berberis julianae)

Berberis Julianae̴Ì?is part of the evergreen Berberis family, but has long, tough thorns that hide beneath the gleaming green leaves - ideal for intruder proof hedging.

We've dedicated time and care into growing your pot grown plant, so it arrives looking wonderfully new and healthy.

The Berberis julianae tends to sit quite upright and is fast growing, meaning it can develop into a dense hedge quickly. The glossy, and dark green leaves are followed by bunches of yellow flowers in Springtime, and then little black/blue berry fruits in the Autumn. You cannot forget the prickly thorns either, that make this hedge ideal when looking for something intruder proof.

Simply, the Wintergreen Barberry provides year-round interest in your garden, and as it is evergreen, can easily be used as a good screen- or can even be used as ornamental value. We can guarantee it is perfect for pretty much any garden style.

The Wintergreen Barberry is good for dry shade, or shady situations, and it can even cope by the coast. However, it is best to avoid wet soil, as this can easily impact the growth rate of this plant. Growth rate- roughly 30cm per annum.

  • Growth height: Average (20-40cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 2.5m+ Tall
  • Soil Type:̴Ì?Normal
  • Exposure: Exposed, Inland
  • Aspect: Semi-shade, Sun
  • Evergreen foliage? Yes

As it is pot grown, you can easily leave the plant in its pot for a few days/weeks before planting it. Just ensure you keep the plant well-watered, and it gets enough sun. Don't leave it for too long, however, as you don't want the roots becoming root bound.

The Wintergreen Barberry trimming/pruning should only be done immediately after the flowering period has finished.

  1. Prepare the soil by mixing in some compost. Dig the hole- this will have to be about twice the width of the root system, but about the same depth.
  2. Remove the plant from its pot by placing one hand on the base of the plant, and the other at the bottom of the pot. Wriggle the pot away gently.
  3. Untangle the roots a little as they may be clumped together.
  4. Place the plant into the hole, ensuring the base of the stem is level with the surface of the soil. Follow this by backfilling the hole with your soil mix, and patting down lightly to secure.
  5. When you're done, thoroughly water the plant. Ensure you regularly water throughout its first year, as the plant needs plenty to be able to settle down, recover, and establish.̴Ì?

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring.
