Instant Impact Beech
(Fagus sylvatica)

The mighty popular Fagus sylvatica is full of flickering leaves that have delicate gold-green colours, which then gradually turn a deep, rich copper in the Autumn.

Although originally titled as deciduous plant, Beech hedging is sometimes known to be semi-deciduous due to the way its bold winter leaves stay on the hedge until its spring leaves start popping through.

Instant impact Beech hedging is perfect for traditional hedging but can also be mixed into a native mixed hedge to add a lovely burst of colour in the Winter. It's one of the best species for attracting wildlife, too.

Fagus sylvatica hedging will grow well in both sun and partial shade, but will always thrive best in well-drained soils, if it is not wet, or clay based. The plant can still grow in windy places, however, making it perfect for using as windbreak hedge.

  • Growth rate: Fast (40-60cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 2.5m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Normal
  • Exposure: Coastal, exposed, inland
  • Aspect: Semi-shade, full sun
  • Evergreen foliage? No

Buying Instant Impact makes it even easier- your plant will arrive on your doorstep fully matured, established, and ready to plant! All the beginning hard work has been done for you- you don't even have to worry about the No. per metre. 1 instant impact trough = 1 metre of hedging.

If you look after it well, your Beech hedging should only need to be pruned twice a year, sometimes only once. The plant can be given a light prune in June if needed, but we recommend leaving the pruning stage until August. This will give the plant enough time to recover and regrow before Winter arrives.

In terms of renovating Beech, you can do so in February, whilst the plant is still dormant. If needing to cut back more than half, do it over two seasons- cut the top and one side the first year, then in the second year, do the other side. Hard pruning can also be carried out as Beech can easily recover with its fast growth rate.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
