About Snowdrops

Each Snowdrop produces a single flower head, with green-tinged, inner petals, and white outer petals. The flowers also develop green seed pods, which are distributed nearby, forming a spread of snowdrops. The grey-green, narrow leaves compliment the flowers nicely.

Galanthus nivalis is quite common in Britain and will grow well under deciduous trees or beside little rivers/streams.

Snowdrops can reach an ultimate height and spread of 12cm x 20cm.

Key Features

It is best to plant Galanthus nivalis bulbs in well-draining, moist soil that is hummus rich. You should place them in light shade- i.e., under deciduous shrubs or trees. Snowdrops can also be placed at the front of borders or at the base of a deciduous hedge. You may often see them planted amongst grass at the front of border displays or rock gardens, too.

It is possible to grow Galanthus nivalis in pots, but they will suffer from dry soil if not watered enough and will have to be re-potted every year.

Pruning & Care

Begin by digging holes that are 3‰ۡó� apart. Place bulbs pointed face upwards, into the holes. Once planted, make sure you water them well as the soil needs to settle in around the bulbs. You will not see any sprouts until late Winter/ early Spring.

Once the flowering season is over, allow the leaves to photosynthesise until yellow, and then remove the dead foliage- do not trim any green foliage.

Make sure you water well during Autumnal and Winter months- we recommend using a water-soluble fertiliser to develop and nourish the bulbs‰ۡó» roots.
