Blackcurrant Ben Sarek
(Ribes nigrum 'Ben Sarek')

Bred in Scotland, Blackcurrant Ben Sarek is an ideal early fruiting species with a compact, neat growth- perfect for small gardens.

Ben Sarek is a high yielding bush of delicious, mouther watering currants, but is still very simple to harvest- just shake the laden branches and the strings will all fall off! That being said, as it does produce a lot of crop, you may need to support the plant prior to picking time. The currants are ideal for cooking, eating, and freezing.

You can plant Sarek bushes quite close together, too, as it has a compact, low-growing nature. It's also resistant to both powdery mildew and frost! It really is the best blackcurrant variety.

Blackcurrant Ben Sarek will always grow best in well-draining, moist soil, that's rich and heavy. Though it prefers full sun, the bush will also tolerate a partially shaded site.

  • Ideal height: 1m-1.2m Small
  • Soil type: Clay, sandy, loam
  • Aspect: Full sun, semi-shade
  • Evergreen foliage? No
  • Crops: Mid July

As this is a bare root plant, soak the roots for at least 2 hours before planting, after they arrive. Plant as soon as you can. If the ground is frozen, place into a temporary pot that's filled with decent compost- once conditions have improved, move the currant plant to the ground.

Keep the plant well-watered during dry weather.̴Ì?

In terms of pruning, your blackcurrant bush will produce the best fruits on the previous year‰ۡó»s stems/branches. Make sure you trim back all shoots to about 2/3 buds of soil after you have planted. After 3 years, cut any weak/damaged shoots away, and about 1/3 of the old branches away. Apply a good fertiliser each spring to boost growth and development.

    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
