Wall Cotoneaster
(Cotoneaster horizontalis)

Cotoneaster Horizontalis̴Ì?is a deciduous hedging plant, ideal̴Ì?for covering a wall/fence,̴Ì?with it being able to̴Ì?grow up to around 1.5m (but only if trained upwards).

The Wall Cotoneaster is a deciduous plant, but despite this, the Winter is when the plant looks its finest. Its herringbone patterns of stems give a basket-weave structure to the hedge, and drips with berries on long, dark stems. In Springtime, the tiny and neat leaves do not conceal the structure, as the foliage also goes on to producing lovely pink-white flowers, that are laden with nectar. The flowers are then followed with red berries in the Autumn (which attracts the lovely birds), and the foliage turns vivid shades of red.

The Cotoneaster horizontalis‰ۡó» flowers and berries will thrive best in a sunny spot; however, the hedge can still grow well in shade. It is a tough, hardy plant that can tolerate any site/soil (except very waterlogged soil). It can also be cut back at any time to retain its herringbone structure- though this must be done with special care.

  • Growth height: Average (20-40cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 1.2m-2.5m Medium
  • Soil Type: Normal
  • Exposure: Coastal, Exposed, Inland
  • Aspect: Semi-shade
  • Evergreen foliage? No
Your Wall Cotoneaster should be trimmed twice a year- once at the beginning of June, and then again in late September. You must prune at these times only, as you do not want to remove any lovely, new growing shoots. After they have been pruned, the plant will also benefit from feeding and mulching- use a general fertiliser or any other high-potassium fertiliser.

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. • Pot Grown

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
