When should I plant Leylandii hedging?
The best time to plant a Leylandii hedge is any time from September through to March, as long as the ground is not frozen.
How far apart do you plant Leylandii plants?
It is recommended to plant Leylandii hedges around 60-100cm apart. If planting at 60cm, you will get a denser hedge quicker. If time is not a worry, then feel free to plant at a larger distance than this, as the plants grow very quickly regardless. It's good to note, however, that we do recommend at least 3 plants per metre for smaller plants (such as 40/60cm), as this promotes best establishment.
How to plant your Leylandii:
Dig the hole about double the size of the plant's root mass. Break up the soil at the bottom of the hole (this will help the roots spread out easier), and mix in some plant feed. If you have poor quality soil, be sure to add some good quality topsoil/multipurpose soil, as well.
Water the root ball well, so it is nice and moist before planting. Remove it from the pot/packaging. Place it into the hole and ensure the top of the roots are only about 1/2 inch below soil level. Fill the hole back up with soil and compost, and press down gently but firmly to secure the plant.
Water the plant well, and ensure it stays moist (especially during summer). Please note that the roots cannot dry out as this is a crucial time for them to establish their roots underground.
