Bare Root Wild Service Tree
(Sorbus Torminalis)

Sorbus Torminalis is a deciduous plant with deep green leaves and pretty white flowers in spring,̴Ì?before the foliage then turns coppery-coloured and falls in autumn.

Bare root Sorbus Torminalis plants are only available to buy and plant from November - March, but can be pre-ordered at any time outside of the bare root season.

Sorbus torminalis bears maple-like, deep green leaves for the most part of the year, before they turn a stunning copper colour in the autumn, just before they fall. The flowers will form in pretty clusters at the end of Spring, and soon turn into oval-shaped, green-brown fruits- that are sprinkled with pale spots by the end of Autumn.̴Ì?

Though Wild Service Tree looks like Maple (Acer Campestre), Sorbus torminalis' leaves are not as uniquely lobed.̴Ì?

Make sure you plant your Sorbus torminalis bare root plant as soon as possible after being delivered, as the roots are tender and cannot be left to dry out.

Wild Service Tree hedging will always grow best in chalk, loam, or sand-based soil, which should be moist but well-draining. The plant can reach an ultimate height of 12m+ within 20-50 years.̴Ì?

  • Growth rate: Fast (40-60cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 12m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Chalk, loam, clay
  • Exposure: Exposed, sheltered
  • Aspect: Full sun, semi-shade
  • Evergreen foliage? No

As soon as you receive your bare root plant, place it straight into a bucket of water for at least 2 hours. The roots must be wet when planted.̴Ì?

Prune your Sorbus torminalis hedging near the end of Winter or beginning of Spring. This is so that pruning wounds do not produce sap. Besides this, all you need to do is remove diseased, dead, crossing, damaged, or congested shoots- those growing out of shape can also be pruned out. You will not need to carry out any routine pruning.̴Ì?

We recommend adding some mulch and feed, however, after pruning. This will maintain its overall health.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
